The Versailles Complex

We had a few heart attack moments, looking into some of the Hong Kong apartments, during flat hunting.

The number one shocking factor in Hong Kong is the obsession on all things grand and glamorous. For some unknown reason, the 18 century European designs are what the general public considered as luxurious living. If there isn’t enough shinny things in your flat, such as marble, silk, velvet, gold and leather, then your friends wouldn’t know how much you have spent on it.

Please don't do this if your home isn't the Versaille.

Don't get me wrong, I love timeless old furniture as much as the next person, I just don't think the above image works for apartments.

Instead of overwhelming your flat with classics, how about just using one or two pieces at a time. Modernized them and mix them up with other elements. That can be much more suitable.

Below are a number of photos borrowed from Abigail Ahern's website. She is a British interior designer whose signature is painting walls in dark color. There are a lot of  mix and match going on as well. Her blog is also very informative and full of ideas. I have posted some of her work below:

Mixing an epic grandfather ceiling light with the neon pink mirror.

The two pictures below weren't Abigail's work.

I have posted this gray study room a few times already. Clearly it is one of my favorite.

A very elegant room with a clear futuristic acrylic chair. I can't tell you enough how much I love it.

Another example of having glossy bold colored furniture such as this glossy yellow desk and funky modern spider lamp in an otherwise very classy library.
