Affordable Art

Can you really put a price tag on arts?

I have bought a few what I called ‘bull-market’ paintings previously. When things were going well, and everyone was making good money, spending a few extra bucks to buy beautiful things in life didn’t seem like such a sin.

Another major reason was that affordable art simply wasn’t available here. Like all things in Hong Kong, there is the top-end market and there is a bucket-load of imitation from Shenzhen. There simply isn't anything in between.

Fortunately, thanks to the internet (and DHL), we are now open to a whole new world of affordable art from up and comers all over the world, disregard of where you are.

Last November, I have bought Allie Snyder’s Let Go from the internet, which surprisingly didn’t cost me an arm. I like the simplicity, the nature and the color of her work. She is also a great lady to deal with directly. A couple of email swapping and we have ourselves a deal. She also tailor-makes special piece according to client’s taste and needs. Check out her online studio here.

This wonderful experience has prompt me to dig further in the cyber space for more decorative work. Etsy.com have a great collection of art, from oil paintings to prints to photography. Prices are usually very affordable, ranging from a hundreds of Hong Kong dollars to thousands. Most of them ship to Hong Kong. Here are a few of my favorite.

 Beautiful landscape painting.

Buying the print version is also a cheaper alternative as to buying the original work.
